The national flag of the Philippines is rectangular in shape with a length-to-width ratio of 1:2. It has a blue right triangle in the upper left corner, denoting patriotism and honor, and within it is a white five-pointed star. The upper part of the flag is red and the lower blue, denoting courage on one side and peace and justice on the other. On the left side of the flag, there is a golden-yellow sun with eight primary rays emanating from the center and three smaller rays between each of the primary rays, symbolizing the first eight provinces that declared independence from Spain.
